Lithuania Post will issue two new postage stamps to commemorate the Winter Olympic Games commencing on February 7 in Sochi (Russia). The stamps issued on the occasion of the 22nd Winter Olympic Games will be released this Saturday, January 18.
The stamps feature a bobsleigh and ice-hockey players. The nominal value of the first stamps is LTL2.15, and the nominal value of the second stamp is LTL2.90. Each stamp will be issued in the edition of 150 thousand copies. The stamps dedicated to the Sochi Olympic Games has been created by the artist Irma Balakauskaitė.
Along with these stamps, the first day cover will be released. On Saturday, letter-post items paid by the new stamps will be marked by the first day cancellation in Vilnius Main Post Office.
Winter Olympics are arranged every four years since 1924. The first Olympic Games have been arranged in Chamonix, France. More than 200 sportsmen from 16 countries competed in six contests: speed-skating, skiing, nordic combined, ski jumping, curling, and bobsleigh.
The Winter Olympic Games to be held this year on February 7-23 in Sochi, Russia, will invite sportsmen of the 22nd games to compete in 15 contests: ice hockey, speed skating, short track speed skating, figure skating, curling, ski jumping, nordic combined, biathlon, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, snowboard, bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge.
The previous Winter Games took place on February 12-28, 2010 in Vancouver, Canada.
