Easter 2014 stamp from Vatican

Easter is the primary feast of the Catholic Church celebrating the victory of Jesus Christ over death. The Philatelic and Numismatic Office of Vatican is marking the occasion this year with a postage stamp issue featuring a detail of the Redemptoris Mater Chapel located on the second Loggia of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. Desired by Pope John Paul II and realized with funds donated to him by the College of Cardinals for his 50th anniversary of priestly ordination, the mosaics adorning the walls of the chapel feature the theme of the Incarnation of the Son of God and how the human person enters into the very life of God, who so exalted human nature as to join it in some way to the nature of God himself. It was the Pope's idea that the Redemptoris Mater Chapel should manifest symbolically the presence of Christ throughout history, but also the union between the See of Peter and the Churches of East and West, in a perfect harmony of art and faith.
