Monaco has issued a stamp to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Pierre de Coubertin. The stamp was designed by Yves Beaujard.
Pierre de Coubertin was born into an aristocratic family in Paris in 1863. He turned his back on the military career that had been mapped out for him, preferring the world of education. Influenced by the culture of the English-speaking world, he militated for the inclusion of sport in French schools. In 1894, he founded the International Olympic Committee to revive the Olympic Games. The first Games of the modern era took place two years later in Athens.
