Flowers of French Polynesia on stamps – Zingiberaceae Family

The Post of French Polynesia has issued six stamps illustrating different species of Zingiberaceae flowers, commonly known as ginger. It is such a beautiful family, perfectly adapted itself to the life conditions of French Polynesia, that the Post and Telecommunications Office of French Polynesia paid tribute to it through this superb issue.

In the French Polynesian flora, whether endemic, native or introduced by Man, the large Zingiberaceae (ginger) family is mainly known for "Chinese" ginger (Zingiber officinale, re'a Tinito) and "Tahitian" ginger (Curcuma longa, re'a Tahiti).

These very colourful, voluptuously-shaped Zingiberaceae can live quite long after they are cut, and therefore, they are quite often at the heart of floral compositions.
