"King Frederik IX is dead. Long live Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II," announced Prime Minister Jens Otto Krag on Christiansborg Castle Square one cold January day in 1972. The heir to the throne, Princess Margrethe, was 31 at the time of her accession, making her Europe's youngest monarch.
To mark her 40th jubilee, Post Danmark, POST Greenland and Posta Faroe Islands are jointly issuing a stamp. It is based on Mikael Melbye's painting of the Queen wearing the Order of the Elephant and the Cross of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Dannebrog, and guarded by the three silver lions from the Great Hall in Rosenborg Castle.
