The year 2011 was declared the International Year of Forests by the United Nations. World Wildlife Fund also agreed to pass 2011 under the sign of the forest, thus the subject of Russian Post's stamp is in tune with global initiatives.
Currently, the amount of deforestation exceeds in several times its volume of natural recovery, which worry the international community. In Russia forests cover more than 40% of the territory, thus about 25% of Earth's forest cover, so the Russian forests can be called a unique natural resource.
The stamp depicts a birch grove, bathed in sunlight.
