Gold embossed special edition by Aland Post

Mariehamn, the only town in Aland, celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2011. Aland Post commemorates this event by issuing a miniature sheet, which is, in fact, a joint issue with the Russian Post.

Mariehamn was founded in 1861, a time when Aland was part of the Russian empire. The town was named after Maria Alexandrovna, the Empress consort of Alexander II of Russia.

An additional and partly gold embossed special edition of 4 000 miniature sheets will also be available. The gold embossing is applied to the edges of the sheet as well as to the frame surrounding the stamp representing a painting of Maria Alexandrovna.
