The year 2010 has been declared by the United Nations as the International Year of Biodiversity. It is a celebration of life on earth and of the value of biodiversity for our lives. This initiative invited the World to take action to safeguard the variety of life on earth.

The stamps depict four species found in the Maltese Islands: the Maltese (Filfla) Wall Lizard, the Storm Petrel, the Maltese Pyramidal Orchid and the Freshwater Crab.

The stamps were designed by local artist Maurice Tanti Burlo.
