Finnish people have selected a 1st class stamp that depicts a summer sauna on the shore as the most beautiful stamp for 2009.
The stamp, which brings to mind the sweet scent of birch whisks, was issued last May in the stamp booklet with a sauna theme designed by Paivi Vainionpaa. The winning stamp received 5,411 votes out of a total of 40,408 votes.
With 3,773 votes, second place in the poll, which was organized by the Postia Sinulle magazine and the Posti website, went to a stamp depicting the Pallas-Yllas national park. A stamp showing the green and flaming Northern lights took third place, with 2,798 votes.
People could vote for their favorite out of all 58 stamps published in 2009. Other top vote-getters included the new personalized stamp entitled Winter Magic released at the end of the year, an Amaryllis Christmas stamp and a letter-carrying pigeon.
