IAAF World Championships in Athletics – Berlin 2009

On Tuesday, March 31, the German Minister of Finance Peer Steinbruck presented the 10-euro commemorative coin "IAAF World Championships in Athletics - Berlin 2009" and the postage stamp series "For Sports".

This is only the third time in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany that a commemorative coin has been issued for an athletic occasion, following the coins created for the Summer Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 and the FIFA World Cup in 2006.

The Federal Minister of the Interior, Dr. Wolfgang Schauble, emphasised the significance of the coin and postage stamp series: "One year after the Olympic Games, we are excited to be hosting the world's elite athletes here at Berlin 2009. With the money raised by the 10-euro commemorative coin, we will be supporting the cultural programme that will accompany this important sports event; through the 2009 sports postage stamp series, we will be able to provide support for top German athletic programmes."
