Stamps honour Lewis Hamilton’s world championship win

Isle of Man Post was first past the chequered flag with a set of postage stamps to honour Lewis Hamilton winning the 2008 Formula One world championship.

Austria Post came second, with a dynamic single stamp depicting Hamilton and his car, scheduled to be issued on March 17. The frame of the stamp, number 20 in an engaging series depicting Formula One Legends, has been designed to look like a chequered flag.

Erich Haas, the director of the Austria Post philatelic department, said: "The stamps show a head and shoulders portrait of the driver, his racing car and his signature. So far 19 stamps have been issued featuring a number of famous British drivers including Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark, Sir Stirling Moss, John Surtees and Graham Hill and the Austrian national hero Niki Lauda. Stamps depicting four other legends, including James Hunt, will follow in May."

The Royal Mail has no plans to issue a Lewis Hamilton stamp. But it has marked British sporting victories in the past. In 2005 it issued a set of stamps to celebrate England winning the Ashes.
