Gibraltar: Two New Stamp Issues Released

250th Anniversary of the Birth of Nelson & RAF 90th Anniversary

Gibraltar celebrates the 250th anniversary of the birth of Horatio Nelson with an issue of 6 stamps, a miniature sheet, 6 sheetlets and the flagship limited edition (1,000 copies) special folder containing the complete set.

Horatio Nelson was born on 29 September 1758 in a rectory in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk, England, the sixth of eleven children of the Reverend Edmund Nelson and Catherine Nelson. His mother, who died when he was nine, was a grandniece of Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Oxford, the de facto first prime minister of the British Parliament.

RAF 90th Anniversary

The RAF was founded on 1st April 1918, during the First World War, by the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. The RAF is the world's oldest air force of any significant size to become independent of army or naval control.

The stamp issue is comprised of 6 stamps featuring two airplanes on each stamp. Featured RAF airplanes are the Short 184, Saro London, Spitfire Mk. IV, Hurricane IIc, Beaufighter II, Lancaster TS III, Hunter Mk. 6, Shackleton MR2, Vulcan, Mosquito, Tornado GR4 and the Jaguar GR3. The miniature sheet commemorates World War I and No. 265 Squadron, an anti-submarine squadron of the Royal Air Force formed in August 1918 at Gibraltar to perform antisubmarine patrols.
