Australia: Lunar New Year – Year of the Rat

The Rat is the first symbol of a new lunar cycle and conveys luck and wealth. It is celebrated by Chinese communities across the world in February.

Dani Poon has been commissioned for the complete cycle of twelve designs and has designed the stamps, mini-sheet and zodiac sheetlet stamps in this issue. Dani was born in China and grew up in Hong Kong. She has seven years design and illustration experience in the graphics industry internationally. After graduating from Swinburne University School of Design in 1998, Dani has worked in Melbourne, Italy and Hong Kong.

The most significant feature of Year of the Rat products will be the appearance of a Seal of Authenticity on the stamp and coin cover/Postal and Numismatic Covers (PNCs). This is the first time the feature has been used on these products and Australia Post plans to continue using the identification technique on future issues of this product type.

Issue date: 8 January 2008
