Austria celebrates the birth of Friedrich Gauermann

Austria honors the 200th anniversary of the birth of world renown naturalist painter Friedrich Gauermann with a stamp issue depicting a painterly study of mountain wildlife.

Born in Miesenbach, Austria in 1807, Gauermann was mainly a self-taught artist who toured the Austrian Alps learning the painting techniques of Dutch landscape painters of the 17th century. He founded the style of Vienna landscape naturalism, but is most recognized for his work featuring detailed studies of animals within the landscape.
