St. Nicholas, Christmas 2006

Gibraltar will issue the new Christmas 2006 stamps on the 2nd November 2006.

The commercial success of the Santa Claus image threatens to obscure that of St Nicholas, the patron saint of children, depicted on all 5 stamps based on various historical references. St Nicholas was a 4th century Bishop who was widely known for his generosity and love for children, hence the 'birth' of the Santa Claus persona. He embraced the true meaning of Christmas; the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and was widely known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.

All stamps have printed text on the gum side with information on the true story of St Nicholas.
