German National and Nature Parks – Bavarian Forest

National and nature parks are to receive original landscape parts as a nature inheritance. The idea to protect an area expressly against human use originates from North America.

The national park Bavarian forest was established on 7 October 1970 as the first national park in Germany. It extends in the southeast of Germany over 243 square kilometers. Together with the adjacent Czech national park Sumava it forms the largest forest protected area of Central Europe.
