50th Anniversary of the Freedom Charter

The South African Post Office issued a miniature sheet containing two stamps commemorating the 50th anniversary of the South African 'Freedom Charter' on 26 June 2005. A special canceller and commemorative envelope have also been issued.

Designed by Thea Swanepoel, the miniature sheet uses the sun rising over the Gariep to symbolise how the Freedom Charter was the beginning of the changes that needed to happen in South Africa. The stamp at the left respresents the creation of the freedom charter 50 years ago. Its ideals are not reality yet, hence the words being faded and reflected, and the scene is in darkness. The stamp on the right-hand side represents the present (50th anniversary of the Freedom Charter), with the light of freedom and democracy shining over the landscape and over the whole South Africa.
