Russian Artist Commemorated

France Post issue a new stamp on 7th March to honour the Russian artist Nicolas de Stael who died fifty years ago.

Born in St Petersburg in 1914, de Stael was a key figure in Paris during the first half of the 20th century and his work is best characterised by his use of simple forms and thick slabs of paint.

The new stamp features one of de Stael's pieces entitled 'Sicile', painted just a year before he threw himself out of his studio window to his death.
