At the turn of the 20th century Icelandic fishermen and shipowners learned to use new fishing techniques. When foreign markets for cod closed during the worldwide recession in the thirties, excellent herring fisheries may have brought Iceland financal independence and herring surely had its share in Iceland becoming a sovereign country in 1944 after 5 centuries of Danish rule.
