StampNews.com is glad to share the latest auction news with our readers. This one concerns an 1862-1871 US$500 large “Persian rug” second issue revenue stamp that is expected to make around US$17,500 at Robert A Siegel auction.
The $500 large Persian Rug is truly a “large” stamp measuring 2 1/8 by 4 inches. It is considered the most beautiful of all US revenue stamps, and some will contend it even deserves the lofty ranking of the most striking issue in all of U.S. postal history.
The elaborate design resembles a Persian rug. The lot will star in part three of the Grant Inman collection sale, which is made up of first, second and third issue US revenue stamps. It’s one of four known examples of this rare stamp to feature its sheet margins and imprints. Only 210 were issued in total.
