StampNews.com hurries to share the latest auction news with our readers: the US $500 “large Persian rug” revenue stamp was the star lot of the recent philatelic saleand has doubled its estimate at Siegel auction. It was sold for US$35,000 against a US$17,500 valuation!
The stamp is said to resemble a Persian rug. Rarity was its key attribute. The well-centred beauty, with its original gum, is one of just four known examples to bear sheet margins and imprints. Only 210 examples were issued in all. The item was the star lot of the third part of the Grant Inman collection sale, comprised solely of revenue stamps.
The $500 large Persian Rug is truly a "large" stamp measuring 2 1/8 by 4 inches. It is considered the most beautiful of all US revenue stamps, and some will contend it even deserves the lofty ranking of the most striking issue in all of U.S. postal history.
