According to info received by StampNews.com Slovenian Post has released a special stamp to celebrate the World Championships in Athletics, which take place this summer in Beijing. The issue was unveiled and put on sale on the 29th of May.
The World Championships will be the biggest sporting event since the Bejing Olympics in 2008 to be held in the spectacular stadium popularly known as the Bird's Nest. The 2008 Olympics have gone down in the annals of Slovene sport. It was here that Primož Kozmus, the most successful Slovene athlete of all time, ascended to Olympus and won Slovenia its first Olympic athletics gold.
The Brežice-born athlete will also be one of the trump cards of Slovenia's team at this year's championships. Defending the Slovene colours alongside him will be many other athletes. Javelin thrower Martina Ratej, the national record-holder who opened the 2015 season with the longest throw in the world, and Slovenia's top pole vaulter Tina Šutej have already made the cut.
The rest of the team setting off to Beijing will depend on the season, but candidates include triple jumper Snežana Vukmirović – a regular finalist at top competitions, runner Maruša Mišmaš, the current Balkan indoor champion, hurdler Marina Tomić and long jumper Nina Djordjevič. A number of young hopefuls will also be lining up alongside the regular stars.
