StampNews.com hurries to inform that Monaco Post has prepared for releasing a special stamp that marks the 800th anniversary of the majestic residence of the Princes of Monaco. The issue has been already designed and is scheduled to be put into circulation on the 11th of July.
On 30th May 1191, Emperor Henry VI conceded sovereignty of "the Rock of Monaco, its port and adjacent territories" to the Republic of Genoa, as well as permission to fortify the location "to defend Christianity against the Saracens".
The acquisition of private land from the Council of Peille and the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pons was completed in 1197. It was not until 1215 that the Genoese laid the first stone of a fortress that would become, after many transformations and many embellishments, the majestic residence of the Princes of Monaco.
