StampNews.com got to know that Latvian Post has released a special stamp celebrating the 200th anniversary of Courland Society for Literature and Art. The item has been designed by Elita Viliama. The denomination of the new stamp is € 0.85 and its print run is 200,000 copies. The issue was put into circulation on the 17th of April.
The 200th anniversary of the Courland Society for Literature and Art is included in the UNESCO calendar of celebrations, paying tribute to the universal role of the Society in promotion of scientific progress in the region. The Society can be considered as the first regional academy of science in the territory of Latvia in particular and in the Baltics in general.
The Courland Society for Literature and Art (Kurländische Gesellschaft für Literatur und Kunst) was founded by a group of academic intellectuals on November 23, 1815 in order to bring together scientists from the Baltic provinces and professors of Tērbata (Tartu) University and promote scientific progress in the area. In later years, the Society contributed to the formation of the museum of Kurzeme (Courland) province and research in archeology, ethnology and linguistics. The Courland Society for Literature and Art is regarded as a precursor of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
