UNESCO promotes freedom of expression and freedom of the press and fosters media independence and pluralism. Today, there are still mass media, both printed and online ones, which are fighting for the right to be free and heard.

Work related to the freedom of expression and freedom of the press is part of the fundamental human rights norms, as outlined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1993, the UN General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day.
