Luxembourg Post issued a block of two stamps commemorating "The Family of Man" exhibition of photographs.
"The Family of Man" collection comprises 503 photographs from 273 artists from 68 countries and was brought together by Edward Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA).
Born in Luxembourg, Edward Steichen is considered as one of the most prominent photographers of our era.
Initially showcased in 1955, the exhibition served as a manifesto for peace and the fundamental equality of mankind through post-war humanist photography.
The photos from artists such as Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dorothea Lange, Robert Doisneau, August Sander and Ansel Adams are displayed in a contemporary and spectacular way.
The exhibition attracted more than 10 million visitors from 1950-1960, while touring more than 150 museums across the globe. Now recognized as legendary, the Family of Man exhibition is considered the pinnacle of Edward Steichen's career. It is permanently exhibited at Clervaux Castle and is one of the documents added to UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.
The collection is now on display in a new museography. The renovation was carried out by the Ministry of Culture of Luxembourg and its cultural bodies, the National Sites and Monuments Department and the National Audiovisual Centre, in cooperation with the Public Buildings Administration.
