StampNews.com found out on the new stamp issue of La Poste (France) dedicated to Jacques Chaban-Delmas bridge in Bordeaux.
This bridge, the seventh in the Bordeaux area, spans Garonne to link Bacalan quarter on the left side and Bastide area on the left bank and dues to better distribute the car traffic between the two banks of Garonne.
It will be opened on March 17, 2013. Its four towers touching clouds bring a new contemporary note in the urban landscape. The construction of the project lasted three and a half years and employed about 900 people, the construction needed 43,000 m³ of concrete and 6,500 tons of structural steel.
The Jacques Chaban-Delmas vertical-lift bridge, creation of architect Thomas Lavigne, is one of the largest in Europe, with a length of 433 m and a height of 77 m. It can lift its central span with a pulley system in just 11 minutes.
Jacques Chaban-Delmas was a major figure of the Resistance, Mayor of Bordeaux, Prime Minister of Georges Pompidou and former President of the National Assembly. He died in 2000 at the age of 85.
