Singapore post issued a set of stamps commemorating historical railway stations. This set of stamps features the Tanjong Pagar and Bukit Timah Railway Stations capturing on the stamp a piece of Singapore's transportation history.
In Singapore, the need for rail system started as early as 1860s as materials and goods had to be moved efficiently to Keppel Harbour, the main point of import/export trade. However, it was only in 1903 that the construction of the much needed rail system started. The first railway system in Singapore was limited to the island and it was only in 1923 with the construction of the causeway that a direct link with Johor, Malaysia was realized. This marked the beginning of a mean of goods transportation, communications and travel between Singapore, Malaysia and Siam.
