The brotherhood of White Penitents, dedicated to solidarity with the impoverished, was the first brotherhood known in Monaco. Dissensions between its members led to a split and the creation, in 1639, of a new brotherhood, the Black Penitents. In 1813, the Bishop of Nice who was also responsible for Monaco, reunited the two ancient brotherhoods. Such is the background of the current Venerable Archiconfrerie de la Misericorde stamp by Monaco post. The stamp depicts the mosaic on the outside wall of the chapel devoted to the Virgin of Mercy in Monaco-Ville, created by Roman artist Ernesto Sprega, famous in particular for his many frescoes in the Prince's Palace.
