Jambo, Jersey's world-famous and much loved 'silverback' gorilla will feature on a new set of stamps to be issued by Jersey Post on 15 September 2012, twenty years after he passed away.
Remembered fondly for the gentleness he displayed towards five year old Levan Merritt who fell into the gorilla enclosure at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in August 1986, Jambo was also a most significant animal. He was the first male gorilla to be born in captivity, the first to be mother-reared and was one of the most prolific breeding 'silverbacks'. His contribution to the saving of his species was immense and his legacy currently exceeds 100 individuals.
The four stamps and Miniature Sheet have been painted by stamp artist and conservationist, William Oliver.
