Rhythm, music, song and dance are inherent in African culture and form part of most traditional African ceremonies and rituals. Many of the musical instruments used by African people are rare and almost unknown to the Western world. To raise awareness of this important cultural legacy, the South African Post Office has issued a set of ten stamps featuring a selection of rare musical instruments from various cultural groups.

The stamps, featuring artwork by Hein Botha, depict:

Gwashi
Ramkie
Sansa
Drums
Bull-roarer
Horns
Flute
Xylophone
Rattles
Bows
