This stamp issue commemorates the opening of the National Service memorial at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

Between 1951 and 1972, 287,000 young Australian men were called up for service in the Navy, Army and Air Force. A total of 212 National Servicemen died on active service - two in Borneo and 210 in Vietnam. In 2002 the National Servicemen's Association of Australia and the Australian War Memorial (AWM) agreed that a National Service memorial be built at the AWM in Canberra. Designed by architects Johnson Pilton Walker, the memorial is a dignified and striking tribute to all National Servicemen. Set in its own garden at the right-hand side of the AWM entrance, the memorial bears the inscription: "Dedicated to all Australian National Servicemen and in memory of those who died".

The memorial and this stamp issue honours their memory.
