The United States Postal Service and comedian/talk show host Ellen DeGeneres have joined together to promote the "Animal Rescue: Adopt A Shelter Pet" stamps. The sheet of 20 commemorative stamps was unveiled on March 17, with an appearance by Postmaster General Jack Potter on the Ellen DeGeneres show.
The set of 20 commemorative stamps features photographs of five cats and five dogs taken by veteran stamp photographer Sally Andersen-Bruce. All ten animals were adopted from a shelter near Andersen-Bruce's home in New Milford, CT.
Although the stamps were unveiled on March 17, they will not go on sale to the general public until April 30. The first-day-of-issuance ceremony for the stamps will be held at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in Hollywood, with several celebrities expected to be in attendance for the event.
Ellen Degeneres has been an outspoken advocate for pet adoption and is partnering with the Postal Service to spread awareness of the plight of shelter pets nationwide. DeGeneres is co-owner of Halo, Purely For Pets, a pet food company, and as her contribution to the 8-week "Stamps to the Rescue" promotion, Halo will generously donate 1 million meals to animal shelters across the country.
A special microsite featuring Ellen DeGeneres, www.StampsToTheRescue.com, has been developed to promote the stamps and pet adoption.
