To commemorate the 400th Anniversary of Kilkenny City a stamp illustrated by Roger O'Reilly was issued by An Post on 16 June, 2009. The status of Kilkenny as a city dates back to a charter granted in 1609 by King James I of England.
The stamp features an illustration of Kilkenny Castle, as viewed from the quays, with St. John's Bridge in the foreground. The first day cover features a view of the Town Hall, High Street, Kilkenny.
