Iceland Post will issue a special souvenir sheet on Sept. 18 to commemorate the International Year of Planet Earth.
The image of Iceland on the souvenir sheet was taken from the polar orbiting satellite Terra (EOS AM-1), owned by NASA. A receiving station for satellite pictures at the University of Dundee in Britain produced the image. It was taken from a height of 705 km on February 28th 2002, at 12:29 GMT, when the satellite was closest to Iceland. Terra orbits Earth over the polar regions 14 times a day.
