European Year of Intercultural Dialogue

European Year of Intercultural Dialogue

On 7 March, 2008, An Post issued a stamp to commemorate the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.

The many languages, religions, ethnic and cultural backgrounds of the countries that make up the European Union pose many challenges, but also offer advantages. Accordingly, 'Together in Diversity' is the motto of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. The year will see a number of different projects take place across the EU as well as national projects in each of the member states.

In Ireland, the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue is aimed at improving the understanding of the needs of various ethnic, religious and cultural groups, with particular focus on education, health, housing, policing, employment, young people, the arts and local government.

The stamp is based on the logo for the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue and features a striking graphic based on the concept of embracing cultural diversity and difference. The stamp and first day cover were designed by Ger Garland.
