Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, along with four other prominent Australians, has joined a philatelic list of national legends.

Australia Post is honouring some of the country's most generous and respected philanthropists in its 2008 release of Australian Legends stamps.

Dame Elisabeth, Victor and Loti Smorgon, Lady Mary Fairfax and Frank Lowy are the latest additions to a list - started in 1997 with Sir Donald Bradman - that is updated to coincide with Australia Day on January 26 each year.

"The stamps recognise great Australians who have made lifelong contributions to the development of our national identity and character," Australia Post's managing director Graeme John said.

He described the 2008 legends as some of the most remarkable and respected Australians in the country.

"Their incredible commitment and long-standing dedication to serving the community, from medicine to science, to arts and education deserves national and widespread recognition."

Issue date: 23 January 2008
