Austria: Christmas 2006
The subject of the first 2006 Christmas stamp – the Holy Family at Rest – is a frequent subject by the artist Franz Weiss, born in Sodingberg near Voitsberg in 1921. His mother communicated to him a Christian world view that has accompanied and characterised his whole life. Religiosity is not just a private matter for him – as a mural painter, as he calls himself, he has created more then 490 works for the public space such as for churches and chapels, historic cycles and small monuments in 237 locations in Austria and abroad.
