Hungary Post is commemorating the XX Winter Olympic Games between 10-26 February 2006 by issuing a special stamp.
The attention of sports fans around the world will be focused on Europe, Turin in Italy to be precise, where the best winter sportsmen and -women from 82 nations will vie for the Olympic titles in 84 disciplines. The opening ceremony on 10 February promises to be an unforgettable show witnessed by 35,000 sports fans in the Olympic stadium and two billion television viewers.
The Winter Olympics were last staged in Italy fifty years ago between 26 January and 5 February 1956 in Cortina d'Ampezzo, when 819 competitors from 32 countries took part. Then the Hungarian ice dance pair Mariann Nagy and Laszlo Nagy brought the silver medal home to Hungary.
The individual idea for design, three silhouettes of the map of Italy in the Italian national colours as ski boots referring to the location of the XX Winter Olympics, imparts a cheerful mood to the stamp. The Olympic logo is in the top right corner. The first day cover shows stylised snowy mountains while the legends are repeated in the commemorative postmark, the stamp and the cover.
