The theme of the 2006 Europa stamps is "Immigrant adaptation seen through the eyes of young people". The number of foreign residents in Iceland is increasing rapidly and has doubled in the last decade. There were almost 5000 foreign residents in Iceland in 1994. Statistics now show that more than 10.000 foreigners reside in Iceland. Even if they can be found all around the country some parts are more popular than others. Thus, 11,4% of males and 4,2% of females in the East are foreign residents. In some communities in the Westfiords up to 20% of the inhabitants hold foreign citizenship. It can be difficult for an individual or families to make their home in a new country, having to adapt to a new language, culture and customs. Most Icelanders have welcomed the immigrants and tried to make their life easier in many ways, knowing that society will profit if they enjoy opportunities to use their skills to make their mark on the environment and enrich it.
