The hypothesis on continental shift was formulated by the German polar-researcher, Alfred Wegener (1880-1930). On 1 November 1930, he celebrated his 50th birthday on the Greenlandic inland ice. A few days later he was involved in a fatal accident together with his Greenlandic companion Rasmus Villumsen during their return to the West coast.
