The first Icelander to win an Olympic medal was Vilhjalmur Einarsson, born 1934. He won the silver medal in triple jump at the Melbourne Olympic Games in 1956.

The mid-fifties saw political instability and uncertainties around the world. Many thought that it would not be advisable to hold the Olympic games in Melbourne because of the distance and costs involved. Still, the Games were held with resounding success. The participants numbered 3184, of which 371 were women, a total of 67 nationalities.
