800 years of the Teutonic Order in Austria

800 years of the Teutonic Order in Austria

Vienna has been the headquarters of the Order of the Teutonic Knights and hence the residence of the Grand Master since 1809. The "Deutsche Haus", housing the Order's central archives, the Gothic Church of the Teutonic Knights and a museum, is directly behind St. Steven's Cathedral.

The library contains a very special treasure, the cupboards having been made personally as a journeyman's test piece by Archduke Eugen of Austria, the last Knight Grand Master of the Order. Ever since the Habsburg Maximilian I, every archduke had been required to learn a craft, while the archduchesses were expected to make precious embroideries and other handicrafts – such as the Order's embroidered chasubles.
