Russia: 200th Anniversary of Kazan State University

Kazan State University was established on November 5 (New Style – 17) 1804 when the Founding Charter and the Regulations of Kazan Imperial University were signed by Emperor Alexander I. During the first decades of its existence the University has become the largest institution of education and science. The greatest discoveries were made at Kazan University: new non-Euclid geometry, new chemical element Ruthenium, the theory of organic compounds, the phenomenon of electron and acoustic paramagnetic resonance. Many distinguished scientists, actors and artists, public figures studied in the university: S.T.Aksakov (writer), M.A.Balakirev (composer), P.I. Melnikov-Pechersky (scientist), Leo Tolstoy (writer), Vladimir Ulianov (LENIN) – politician, V. Khlebnikov (poet & prose writer).
