Baikonur is one of the largest cosmodromes of Eurasia, was founded in 1955. Launch complexes, ground technical and ground control facilities for space project realization were built there. The first artificial Earth satellite was launched into space from the cosmodrome. Yu. Gagarin and V. Tereshkova set off their first space flights from Baikonur as well as VOSTOK, VOSKHOD, SOYUZ spacecrafts, SALYUT and BURAN orbiting space stations, and many other satellites and interplanetary launch vehicles were launched into space from Baikonur cosmodrome.
