Hattie McDaniel commemorated

Hattie McDaniel, the first black winner of an Academy Award, has been honored with a new stamp as part of the US Postal Services' Black Heritage series.

The Kansas-born actress won the Oscar for Best supporting actress for her portrayal of Scarlett O'Hara's maid in the 1939 classic "Gone with the Wind".

The 39c stamp is based upon a photograph of McDaniel in the blue dress she wore when collecting her Academy Award in February 1940.
