Stamp of approval for British design classics Stamp of approval for British design classics

Iconic British designs such as the red telephone box and the London Underground map are to feature on a new set of postage stamps to be released in the New Year, Royal Mail said on Monday.

The set of 10 stamps, featuring classic designs from the 20th century, will go on sale from January 13.

The price of first and second-class stamps is to rise by 3 pence from 6 April, the Royal Mail has announced.

For standard letters weighing up to 100g, a first-class stamp will cost 39p, while second-class will be 30p.

28 July 2008 was the 10th anniversary of the passing away of one of the most outstanding Polish 20th century literary artists - Zbigniew Herbert. This extraordinary poet, essayist and playwright didn't live to receive a Nobel prize, although in the minds of many of the connoisseurs and admirers of his work worldwide he had deserved it more than anybody else. Therefore, by a resolution of the Polish Parliament, the year 2008 has been proclaimed the year of Zbigniew Herbert.

Polish Post introduced a postage stamp containing an image of the writer on the background of his poems earlier this month.

On 22 January, 17 different stamps will go on sale in six separate issues. The striking 1809 Building a Nation miniature sheet goes back 200 years in Finnish history to the Diet of Porvoo in the company of the great men of the day. The four stamps on the sheet depict the Tsar of Russia and Grand Duke of Finland Alexander, and leading Finns, Counts G.M. Sprengtporten and C.E. Mannerheim and G.M. Armfelt.

The Oregon Statehood stamp will be released on January 14, 2009. The first day of issue ceremony will be at the World Forestry Center in Portland.

The stamp was painted by a well known illustrator from Beaverton, Oregon named Gregory Manchess. The original painting is quite small, only about 4x9 inches.
