Fridrik Olafsson Chess Grandmaster Fridrik Olafsson Chess Grandmaster

With his chess victories in the late fifties Fridrik Olafsson became the first Icelander to be awarded the title of a Chess Grandmaster. His achievements marked a breakthrough in Icelandic chess history.

This stamp depicts the final position in the chess played by Fridrik Olafsson and Bobby Fischer at the tournament in Portoroz 1958. Fridrik, playing white, won this game.
