USPS Honors Charles W. Chesnutt
Charles Waddell Chesnutt will be immortalized on a stamp in the popular Black Heritage commemorative stamp series issued by the U.S. Postal Service. He is considered the first African-American writer to receive major acclaim. He made an important breakthrough when his short story, "The Goophered Grapevine," appeared in the August 1887 issue of Atlantic Monthly.

Sporting Events and Stamp Exhibitions Coming to Austria
Austrian Post is the official sponsor of the UEFA EURO 2008, a soccer sporting event set to take place across four cities in both Austria and Switzerland from June 7-29, 2008. To mark this occasion, they have released a sheet of eight stamps illustrating the eight different venues of the event, including the Vienna Ferris Wheel, the Hohensalzburg Castle in Salzburg, the Klagenfurt Lindwurm dragon, and the goldene Dachl in Innsbruck. And the festivities don't end here. With the upcoming WIPA 2008 Vienna International Stamp Exhibition, Austrian Post has issued an additional stamp, in anticipation of the event, depicting St. Stephen's Cathedral.

Remembrance and Beyond

Finland: Two-stamp miniature sheet to be issued for Kimi Raikkonen
Kimi Raikkonen's 2007 Formula 1 world championship is to be celebrated with stamps. The commemorative issue is a self-adhesive miniature sheet bearing two 1st class non-value indicator stamps. The miniature sheet will be issued on 5 September 2008. The reigning world champion will get his stamp on the verge of the Belgian Grand Prix, two days before the start of the qualifying round. The designer of the miniature sheet is Antti Raudaskoski.

Ireland: Chinese Year of the Rat 2008
The Chinese calendar follows a sequence of sixty years and is based on both lunar and solar movements. Chinese New Year starts on the first day of the new moon at the beginning of the year. Therefore according to the Gregorian calendar, Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year, somewhere between 21 January and 20 February. The celebrations last fifteen days and end with the Lantern Festival, which is held on the fifteenth night.

Winter Landscape, Haminalahti is the Most Beautiful Stamp of the Year 2007
The winner of the Most Beautiful Stamp of the Year 2007 competition is a stamp bearing part of a painting by Ferdinand von Wright (1822–1906), entitled Winter Landscape, Haminalahti (1856, National Museum of Finland/Cygnaeus Gallery). The painting was adapted for the stamp by Paivi Vainionpaa. The winner is a 1st class non-value indicator stamp and it was issued on 24 January 2007.

Stamp honoring biochemist bears error
Use it as a postage stamp, not a chemistry text.
In spite of a small error in a chemical formula, the U.S. Postal Service is going ahead with a commemorative stamp honoring biochemist Gerty Cori. She discovered cori ester, a derivative of glucose.
The formula for the chemical is shown on the stamp. The error is in the placement of a line in the formula and does not create a new chemical, Postal Service spokesman Roy Betts said Tuesday.

China offering 'Year of the Rat' stamps
China has released a new postage stamp commemorating the Chinese lunar calendar's "Year of the Rat."
China's official Xinhua news agency said Sunday the stamps were unveiled recently in Guizhou Province, the region with the only county in which the rat stamps can be officially postmarked.

Living images on Alpine Skiing stamps
The new stamp year in Finland begins on 24 January. On that date a miniature sheet will be issued bearing a total of 11 different 1st class non-value indicator stamps. Also issued on the same day will be two sets of stamps, one with 3 stamps denominated 5 cents and another with three 10 cent stamps. All these issues will have something new, never before seen on Finnish stamps.

King Juan Carlos I stamps
Eight new stamps with the portrait of H.M. King Juan Carlos I are issued within the definitive series.
