The violet is, along with the pansy, one of the roughly 400 species of the viola genus, a genus that is mainly to be found in moderate northern climates and that belongs to the violaceae family, to which it also gives its name.

'Be prepared'

Austria: Animals - Whiskered Bat
The whiskered bats are small European bats. They are found around human habitation and around water. It prefers to hunt flies and mosquitoes in small valleys with deciduous trees and flowing water. Pesticides and insecticides are toxic for those helpful little animals.

Eurovision-2007
The miniature sheet dedicated to the 52nd Eurovision Song Contest, held at Helsinki's Hartwall Arena on 10 and 12 May, features Finland's entries to the contest in different decades. Last year's Finnish victors, monster band Lordi, is celebrated with two stamps. The first stamp bears a portrait of the band's soloist, Mr. Lordi. The drawing is by Mr. Lordi or Tomi Putaansuu himself. The other stamp shows the whole band. In addition to Mr. Lordi, it depicts drummer "Kita" (Sampsa Astala), guitarist "Amen" (Jussi Sydanmaa), bassist "OX" (Samer el Nahhal) and keyboards player "Awa" (Leena Peisa).

Little Known Tove Jansson Painting on Stamp
Kallskar, a tiny island on the outskirts of the Aland archipelago, is today one of the best known tourist attractions of Kokar. In the large house on the island, above the mantelpiece, hangs a relatively unknown painting by the 'Moomin-mamma' Tove Jansson. The painting will now be featured on a stamp to be issued 18 April 2007.

Roger Federer
There is probably nothing new that can be written about Roger Federer, the tennis star from the Basel area who has taken the world by storm - both with his playing style and natural charm. Federer's virtuoso skill on the tennis court has prompted Swiss Post to issue a special stamp. He has now been at the top of the ATP rankings for 161 consecutive weeks, thus beating the existing record set by Jimmy Connors (160 weeks, 1974-1977).

AN Post: 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome
To celebrate the historic 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, a stamp, FDC & PNC were issued on 28 March 2007.
The stamp was designed by Steve Simpson and features an image of the European Union flag, onto which the signatories of The Treaty of Rome are superimposed. The background image is of the Palazzo dei Conservatori, which is located in the Piazza del Campidoglio where the Treaty of Rome was signed 50 years ago.

Austria: 80th Birthday of Pope Benedict XVI
On 16 April 2007, Pope Benedict XVI will be celebrating his 80th birthday. It is two years since the German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected Pope on 19 April 2005, choosing the name Benedict XVI. He is the 265th Pope in the history of the Roman Catholic Church and the 8th Pope from Germany.
